WASHINGTON, D.C. - (July 20, 2002) – Poggenpohl U.S., Inc., leaders in high-performance luxury kitchen and bath design, today announced the opening of a new showroom in Washington, D.C., its first in the mid-Atlantic region. The showroom is part of a major, new real estate development in Georgetown near the Key Bridge called “Cady’s Alley.”

Poggenpohl selected its 1,500 square-foot Cady’s Alley historic location because the area’s European ambience of small boutiques, outdoor cafes and historic row houses is reminiscent of the company’s old-world origins. Poggenpohl is a division of the Nobia Group, a Swedish conglomerate, and is headquartered in Hertfort, Germany. The company is celebrating its 110th anniversary this year.

“We moved to a well-designed neighborhood to offer Washingtonians distinctive, state-of-the-art kitchens,” said Lothar Birkenfeld, President of Poggenpohl U.S., Inc. “Poggenpohl kitchens not only perform aesthetically and ergonomically, they offer a great return on investment. The D.C. market is ripe for Poggenpohl.”

Remodeling Magazine’s Cost vs. Value Report showed the ROI for kitchen renovations in the Washington area is 128 percent, nearly 50 percent higher than the national average.

Poggenpohl converted two traditional retail spaces into one larger space. In contrast to Georgetown’s conventional turn-of-the-century buildings, shoppers who enter Poggenpohl’s new store will find a modern interior of lofty ceilings and dramatic skylights.

The showroom will feature six progressive kitchen displays, including the +Segmento, which embraces a sleek and almost weightless look and the all-aluminum Alu2000 which captures the minimalist, industrial aesthetic in materials like stainless steel worktops, aluminum cabinet surfaces. The +Segmento won the “Good Design Award” by the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design.

“Today’s kitchen is the heart of the home,” said Amir Farazad, Managing Director of Poggenpohl, D.C. “It’s more than a place for preparing meals. It’s where families and friends meet, eat, talk, work and entertain. Poggenpohl hopes to accommodate Washington’s design-savvy customers who look for start-to-finish design planning for their kitchens and baths and want enduring quality.”
